Mikumi National Park
TANZANIA’S UNDERESTIMATED TREASURE WITH WIDE PLAINS & EXTRAORDINARY LIFE
A Safari Paradise Awaits
Mikumi National Park, the fourth-largest in Tanzania, spans 3,230 square kilometres and is located in the southern region, close to Dar es Salaam. Known for the stunning Mkata Floodplain, it offers a safari experience reminiscent of the Serengeti, with a rich variety of wildlife including elephants and lions.
Established in 1964 and managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority, Mikumi has grown into a popular destination thanks to improved accessibility via the Dar es Salaam highway. The park’s diverse habitats provide a sanctuary for both iconic and lesser-seen species.
A Gateway to Southern Wilderness
Mikumi’s strategic location near Dar es Salaam makes it a convenient stop for travellers exploring Tanzania’s southern circuit. Originally lesser known, the construction of the southern highway transformed it into a key destination for both local and international tourists.
The park is celebrated for its abundant wildlife and its role in conservation. Visitors can enjoy open savannah landscapes and spot a variety of animals, making Mikumi a great safari destination due to its accessibility and authentic wilderness experiences.
